The Game
QuarterPole is an early 90s horse racing simulation from Microleague based on the boardgame of the same name.
The graphics are well done for the time and actually better than I expected. Microleague has never been known for being on the cutting edge in the graphics department, but in QuarterPole they are well-done indeed. It's easy to tell the individual horses from each other and people milling around the track are well rendered as well.
You start by buying a betting program and a tip sheet. You don't have to buy a tip sheet, but it's HIGHLY recommended. Then you pick your ponies, place your bets and off you go! Hopefully your horse will come in front and not be an "also-ran". But just racing isn't all you can do here. If you're so inclined, you may buy a horse and take it through a whole season of races. Will your horse be a nag or the next Secretariat? You'll have to hire a trainer as well, but the program does this for you automatically. If you don't like the way your horse is being trained, you can fire your present trainer and hire a new one.
The bottom line is QuarterPole is a fine game in the rare genre of horse racing simulations. If you have even the slightest interest in racing it's worth a try even today.
